Jim Buckley

Buckley launch with Buckley_edited.jpg

Jim Buckley the man, at Jim Buckley the boat's launching ceremony.

In 2023, we received a new boat! She was a 51 year old Pocock racing shell in need of some serious tender loving care. Part of our club's mission is to "preserve and celebrate the legacy of traditional wooden racing shells." In this spirit, we undertook the needed work.

Nine months of loving restoration work by Rat Island Rowers followed. Once completed, the shell was renamed the Jim Buckley, in honor of one of our club's founders. She has now joined our 5 other wooden Pocock racing shells that are rowed daily, and proudly displayed annually at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Show.

In the photo above, we receive our newest boat. She is 51 years old, has varnish peeling, and is wrapped in plastic. It is our club's quest to "preserve and celebrate the legacy of traditional wooden racing shells," and we believe we can restore this boat and continue to fulfill our mission.
